No. 2 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama set for unbeaten SEC clash in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night
Two 5-0 teams tied atop the SEC standings meet at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday night, with College GameDay in town and Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell entering the Heisman conversation.
The marquee game of college football's Week 6 arrives Saturday, when No. 2 Georgia visits No. 6 Alabama in a meeting of undefeated SEC powerhouses at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, and both teams enter at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, tied atop the SEC standings with an inside track to the SEC championship game on the line for the winner.
Georgia stayed at No. 2 in this week's AP Poll after rolling to a 38-14 home win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, a performance coach Kirby Smart called the team's most complete to date. The Bulldogs also own a 41-13 dismantling of Oklahoma in Week 4 and have clicked on both sides of the ball despite missing star running back Nate Frazier, who has sat out the last two games. Georgia holds the No. 2 spot in ESPN's Football Power Index as well, and USA TODAY Sports' NCAA Re-Rank 1-138 keeps the Bulldogs at No. 1.
Alabama arrives with momentum of its own after a 56-23 road demolition of then-No. 16 Mississippi State on Saturday. The Crimson Tide remained No. 6 in ESPN's FPI with a rating of 27.0, and the metric projects Alabama to finish 10.7-1.9, gives the Tide a 27.4% chance to win the SEC, an 87.7% chance to reach the College Football Playoff and 12.5% odds to win the national title. Alabama's most recent meeting with Georgia produced a split series last season: the Tide won 24-21 in Athens, while Georgia answered with a 28-7 rout in the SEC Championship game.
Russell crashes the Heisman Watch
Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell cracked Sporting News' Heisman Watch top contenders list after outdueling Mississippi State's Kamario Taylor, passing for three touchdowns and running for another in the 56-23 win. Russell has completed 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns without an interception against the Bulldogs' defense, and through five games he has thrown for 1,414 yards and 11 scores with a 71.2% completion rate. Whether he stays on the list could be decided Saturday against Georgia, whose quarterback Gunner Stockton sits in the watch list's fringe category.
Our guys enjoy the game, they really enjoy the work that comes with it, everything that leads to it and executing and being their best on Saturday. We just got some things going, took advantage of short fields when we needed to. When we got those times, the offense punched it in.
— Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer
The SEC dominates the national picture entering the weekend. Three other league teams join Georgia and Alabama in the AP top 10 — LSU, Mississippi and Missouri, which climbed 16 spots to No. 13 after snapping a nine-game losing streak against ranked opponents with a 45-17 win over Florida. No. 1 Texas, the only other unbeaten SEC team, faces Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry on Saturday. Saturday's winner in Tuscaloosa will leave at most two unbeaten teams standing in the conference.
