Miami's Moment, Mensah's Baggage, Norvell's Clock

College football's July heat is rising — in the standings, the transfer portal, and the coaching hot seat.

via On3 Miami

The college football world has settled its gaze on Miami this summer, and Thursday made clear the Hurricanes are carrying both momentum and complications into 2026. Their championship-game pedigree has generated genuine national title conversation, but the program's marquee offseason acquisition came wrapped in a legal dispute and a public family reckoning that underscores how messy the modern roster-building era can get.

Florida State provided the sharpest contrast — a program with comparable resources and expectations that now finds itself in a different kind of spotlight. When players themselves are publicly naming the stakes, and a buyout north of $50 million is the backdrop, a coaching situation has moved beyond water-cooler talk into something more consequential. The ACC, it turns out, is generating more coaching-seat heat than any other conference this preseason.

Recruiting and individual storylines filled out the rest of the day. Alabama's ability to pry a committed prospect from Auburn in the middle of summer is a reminder that the Iron Bowl rivalry never actually goes dormant. And at ACC Kickoff, SMU arrived with a coordinated Heisman push and an off-field distinction for Kevin Jennings that made the Mustangs one of the more talked-about programs in the room — not bad positioning for a program still finding its footing in a Power Four league.
