Clemson Lands 4-Star DT Seth Tillman But Slides in ESPN 2027 Rankings After Missing on LB
South Pointe's Seth Tillman commits to the Tigers over Georgia, Michigan, and South Carolina, while a linebacker loss nudges Clemson down in ESPN's updated 2027 class rankings.
Clemson secured a significant in-state commitment on Saturday, landing four-star defensive tackle Seth Tillman from South Pointe High School in Rock Hill, S.C., over fellow finalists Georgia, Michigan, and South Carolina. The pledge gives Dabo Swinney's program a win on the recruiting trail against a group of programs that each received official visits from Tillman.
Tillman, listed at 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, is ranked the No. 127 prospect nationally according to the 247 Composite and checks in as the No. 3 player in the state of South Carolina. On Rivals, he is slotted at No. 133 in the Industry Ranking. As a junior, Tillman posted 8.5 sacks and 27 tackles for loss across 13 games, a production line that drew widespread Power Four interest.
The commitment continues a pattern of Clemson successfully defending its home state at the line of scrimmage, beating out South Carolina and Georgia to keep a high-profile in-state target in the family. Tillman's addition is expected to bolster a 2027 defensive front that the program has prioritized in this cycle.
Linebacker Miss Costs Clemson Ground in Class Rankings
The good news on the Tillman front arrived alongside a setback at linebacker. Roman Igwebuike, a 6-foot-3, 226-pound four-star prospect, spurned Clemson to commit to Notre Dame, choosing the Fighting Irish over Swinney's program. Igwebuike was considered a top-10 linebacker in the 2027 class, making his departure a notable gap in Clemson's recruiting board.
The combined effect of the Igwebuike loss and the overall composition of the class pushed Clemson down slightly in ESPN's updated 2027 team recruiting rankings. Despite the dip, analysts have noted that the program should remain encouraged by what it has assembled to this point in the cycle.
With Tillman now in the fold and the 2027 cycle still in its early stages, Clemson heads into the summer with a reinforced defensive line group and ongoing work to do at linebacker following the Igwebuike decision.
