FSU Faces Portal Boomerang, OL Flip, and No. 28 FPI Heading Into 2026

Four former starters will line up against the Seminoles this fall, while a priority offensive lineman flips to Cal and preseason projections slot Florida State 28th nationally.

Florida State is navigating a difficult offseason stretch as multiple setbacks converge ahead of the 2026 season. The Seminoles will face four former starters from their own 2025 roster as opponents this fall, lost a blue-chip offensive lineman to Cal in the recruiting cycle, and enter the year ranked just 28th in ESPN's preseason Football Power Index.

The transfer portal consequences will be felt early and often on the schedule. In FSU's second game of the season, against visiting SMU on Sept. 7, the Seminoles will encounter former contributors who departed through the portal. The pattern repeats across four separate games throughout the fall, meaning Florida State must gameplan against players who know the program's schemes and culture from the inside.

Recruiting Gap on the Offensive Line

On the recruiting front, Florida State missed out on a priority target over the weekend when blue-chip offensive lineman DaJohn Yarborough chose Cal over the Seminoles and Washington. The commitment leaves a notable void: FSU currently has no offensive line commitment in its 2027 class, which ranks No. 53 overall and No. 15 in the ACC according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Rebuilding the offensive line has been an organizational priority for the Seminoles, making Yarborough's flip to Cal a particularly pointed loss. Without a commitment at the position, Florida State will need to identify and secure an OL prospect to address what is becoming a visible gap in the class.

The external projections reflect the uncertainty surrounding the program. ESPN's preseason FPI slots Florida State at No. 28 nationally heading into the 2026 season, a ranking that places the Seminoles outside the top quarter of college football's landscape at a time when the program is working to reestablish itself as an ACC contender.

Taken together, the portal boomerang effect, the offensive line recruiting miss, and a modest FPI standing paint a picture of a program facing genuine roster and perception challenges as the 2026 season approaches.
